It’s hard to believe that it was 26 years ago when Doc Brown first took us back to the future. It seems like only yesterday that he was loading up Mr. Fusion and scoffing at roads. Alas, time has gone by and the future is upon us…literally. October 21, 2015 was the year that Doc, Marty and Jennifer visited in the sequel to the 1985 hit Back to the Future. Marty’s mind was blown at at the advancements humanity had made in a quarter of a century, but just how accurate were writers Robert Zemeckis’ and Bob Gale’s predictions of the year 2015? They nailed a few, such as video conferencing and wearable technology but there are a few key items that the rabid fan-base (and beyond) still crave. Though some may not be as far off as you think, these are the Back to the Future 2015 predictions that we’re still waiting for:
This is probably the biggest miss of the Back to the Future predictions but one that everyone would love to see become a reality. In Back to the Future II Doc. scoffs at the archaic notion of roads before transforming the beloved Delorean into an aircraft and taking flight. We’re a long way from having flying cars in the hands of the public but its a fun thought. Air traffic controllers rejoice, you’ve still got some time.
In 2001 Nike, eBay and the Michael J. Fox Foundation raised nearly $5.7 million auctioning 1,500 pairs of Nike Air Mags; the shoe worn by Marty McFly in Back to the Future II. Though these replicas didn’t lace themselves up as Marty’s do in the film, Nike recently announced that we could see self-tying laces in the very near future. Earlier this year NiceKicks.com reported that Tinker Hatfield, the man behind the hi-top trainers, confirmed that his team was working to deliver the Nike MAG in 2015 with Power Laces. While we can only assume that they would have loved to align the launch of the new kicks with the October 21, 2015 milestone there are still 2.5 months left in 2015 for these to be released. We’ll keep you up to date on any announcements from Nike at TheGeeko.com.
In Back to the Future II, Marty is almost eaten alive by a holographic shark advertising Jaws 19. Unfortunately only four Jaws feature films were ever released in theaters. I wonder though, do Sharknado 1, 2 and 3 count? Nah. Maybe? Nah.
Just kidding, we’re definitely not waiting for these.
The Hover Board
If flying cars are the biggest miss, then the hover board is most missed prediction from Back to the Future II. So much so that one die hard fan paid £26,700 in a London auction for the iconic movie prop in October, 2014 as reported by Digitalspy. It’s tough to imagine a cooler toy and any kid (or adult) definitely wished that Mattel had stepped it up on this one. I mean, c’mon guys, it’s just a hot pink skateboard that defies gravity and looks good doing it! Hendo however, seems to have done what Mattel could not. Check out the video below, in which Tony Hawk tests out a real live hoverboard. For realz! It relies on magnets, which means the hoverboard can only hover over non-ferrous materials but hey, its a start! Now we just need this bad boy in stores!
