Late 2013 brought salivating fans the announcement that Disney’s Marvel and Netflix had joined forces to bring four Marvel properties to the small screen: Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and Luke Cage. Daredevil was to be released in 2015 and the rest would follow over multiple years of original programming. Netflix committed to a minimum of four, thirteen episode series’ along with a The Defenders mini-series event. Daredevil has now completed its first season and was extremely well received having been nominated for 3 Emmy’s including Main Title, Sound Editing and Outstanding Special Visual Effects. Behind those outstanding special visual effects was a company called Shade VFX, who have gifted us with a behind the scenes video, simply entitled: Daredevil: Behind the Visual Effects.
“Our goal as a company is to support the story being told by the filmmakers.” said Bryan Godwin, Shade VFX CEO and Executive VFX Supervisor. “Supporting visual effects doesn’t mean simple. In fact, supporting visual effects are often very very complicated, from completely CGI humans that we use as digital stunt doubles to entire crowd replications or the backdrop to a city that we weren’t even in. If done well you’ll never know that it happened. For Daredevil, we produced over a thousand supporting visual effects shots over the entire series. These ranged from complete digital doubles where stunts weren’t safe to have Daredevil jumping off a rooftop, to blood-hits and wounds. In particular, there was a lot of support to the idea of the violence and gore that happens in Daredevil, which was a big departure from Marvel; to try and set this story in a more realistic and dark place, the real streets of New York…As visual effects artists our goal is to make sure that your viewing experience is one that you’re transported into the reality of this world.”
The video has a very interesting break down of the Red Ninja fight scene that shouldn’t be missed. Check it out below and tell us what you think in the Comments section.
