Just when we didn’t think we could get any more excited about Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s upcoming Jumanji sequel, Karen Gillan has joined the cast.
Deadline has reported that the Doctor Who veteran will join Mr. Johnson, Jack Black and Kevin Hart in the Sony film. Gillan will play the role of Martha – a role that took the studio quite some time to cast. Gillan reportedly blended the best with the existing cast members to score the coveted role. Jake Kasdan (New Girl) is directing the sequel to the 1995 hit and Sony has set a July 28, 2017 release date. Matt Tolmach and William Teitler will produce and Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg wrote the most recent version of the script.
It seems as though great care is being taken to respect the world that the 1995 blockbuster created. The original pulled in over $260 million and still holds up as a great family film today. “…our continuation story (20 years later) allows us to recognize and pay homage to Robin Williams’ legacy in ‘Jumanji,’” Johnson told Variety. “The character of Alan Parish will be immortalized in our movie. That’s what a sequel allows us to do, as well as explore a whole new ‘Jumanji’ universe.”
“We added more characters to our story,” Johnson said. “Now there’s five heroes who all bring their own ‘strengths and weaknesses’ to the game. Of course we have our main antagonist and his bad guys and a fun ‘neutral’ character as well. One of the best elements from the original and one that we can build on is the animals of ‘Jumanji.’ That was a such a dangerously fun element of the original movie and of course we had to carry on that tradition.”
