Matt Smith, aka the 11th Doctor, aka Mr. Geronimo (TM) may be the front-runner to play Magizoologist Newt Scamander in J.K. Rowling’s upcoming Harry Potter spinoff, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. The former Doctor Who star has reportedly expressed interest in the role and the Irish Examiner reports that Smith is said to be the “favorite” to play the part.
The story takes place 70 years before the arrival of young Mr. Potter and though our favorite students of Hogwarts won’t be center stage, Warner Bros. CEO Kevin Tsujihara has said that the story will run “adjacent” to the Harry Potter franchise.
There has been a lot of hype building about J.K. bringing a Harry Potter spinoff to the big screen but so far, she’s receiving nothing but praise from her colleagues. “We’re all very excited [about it]. It’s still very early stages, but Jo has written a fantastic script.” producer David Heyman recently told Cosmopolitan UK. “Jo is a remarkable writer whose imagination is tireless and her knowledge of the world she is writing about is SO much greater than what you read or what you can imagine.”
Tsujihara echoed Heyman’s sentiments while chatting with the Hollywood Reporter: “[Beasts] is really a wonderful gift from [J.K. Rowling] to the fans, and we are a part of it. It is like Star Wars. It is not exactly a linear story but an adjacent story…Jo wrote [the film version of Beasts] herself, which is just absolutely amazing, and she is so talented. You see the passion that everyone has for the world that she has created, and it’s just fantastic to extend it.”
In November of last year, while sitting down with IGN, Heyman spoke to the script having a comedic tone. He stated, “It’s funny, it’s vivid, it’s exciting. It’s filled with all the hallmarks of her incredible imagination.” Anyone familiar with Matt Smith’s four years as the bowtie touting Doctor (because they’re cool) can attest to his ability to shift from comedy to macabre and back again at the drop of a fez. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them sounds like its right up his alley.
With the Harry Potter franchise, Rowling introduced us to an immersive world filled with fun and imagination and we can’t wait to go back in time to get to know it even more. Who better to take us there than our beloved Doctor?
Come along, Pond.
