The Best Halloween TV Episodes

big bang theory cast dressed as the flash

Halloween episodes are a gift for screenwriters, providing them with a spooky excuse to have a little fun during the busy fall season. Not unlike many occupations, when writes are enjoying themselves they tend to produce some pretty excellent results. Because of this, Halloween episodes are actually a gift to the viewing public. So, if you are looking for a way to get into the Halloween spirit, open up Netflix or blow the dust off those old seasons you have on DVD and treat yourself to a few of the awesome Halloween episodes on our list!  These are TheGeeko’s best halloween tv episodes:

That 70’s Show – Season 3 Episode 4 – “Too Old To Trick Or Treat, Too Young To Die”

that 70s show cast dressed up for halloweenEvery teenager faces the inevitable day when trick or treating is no longer an option – the days of collecting candy in a pillowcase left behind with other childhood activities. Too Old To Trick Or Treat, Too Young To Die begins with fan-favourite character Fez garbed in an excellent Dr. Frank N. Furter costume (a nod to The Rocky Horror Picture Show), before launching into a Hitchcock inspired episode. Replete with references to the master of suspense’s spookiest, this episode includes scenes from classic films such as North By Northwest, Vertigo, Rear Window, The Birds and more.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer – Season 2 Episode 6 – “Halloween”

Ethan Rayne is an old friend of Rupert Giles who appears in Sunnydale only when trouble is brewing. In this Halloween episode, Ethan opens a costume shop and the Scooby gang picks up costumes for a fun Halloween night out. The costumes are enchanted and cause everyone wearing one to become their persona of choice. Xander, as he often does in the early seasons, steals the episode with his army fatigue costume which turns him into a bona fide commando.

The Big Bang Theory – Season 1 Episode 6 – “The Middle-Earth Paradigm”

Big bang theory cast in The Flash suitsOur favourite TV geeks attend a Halloween party at Penny’s apartment. Initially, Leonard, Raj, Sheldon and Howard all dress in costume as The Flash prompting a hilarious wardrobe change before heading off to the party (with Sheldon abstractly dressed as “The Doppler Effect”). A brilliant episode from the early days when the scariest thing about the show was Raj’s fear of speaking to girls.

Scream Queens – Season 1 Episode 5 – “Pumpkin Patch”

As a new show in 2015 Scream Queens is proving to be the perfect cocktail of equal parts humour and gore. Sorority president Chanel #1 throws a pumpkin patch party in an attempt to win votes and be re-elected as the Queen of Kappa house. The Red Devil is of course on the campus prowl and chases Chanel #5 and her two boyfriends (Roger and Dodger) into a snowy hedge maze designed to replicate the spooky final scenes of Jack Torrance in The Shining. Given that the entire season is a big shout out to everything we love about Halloween (including the original Scream Queen herself, Jamie Lee Curtis), we would expect nothing less than an epic Halloween episode from this show.

South Park – Season 3 Episode 10 – “Korn’s Groovy Pirate Ghost Mystery”

Korn fan or not, this episode is pretty funny. Scooby-Doo and Star Wars are both referenced as pirate ghosts take over South Park. Korn eventually saves the day and solves the mystery with a sidekick named “niblet” and Wendy (dressed as Chewbacca – again) wins the annual costume contest. The episode ends with Kenny’s death by Snowspeeder (a shout out to The Empire Strikes Back).

Community – Season 2 Episode 6 – Epidemiology

community cast dressed up for haloweenA hilarious zombie episode! Dean Pelton throws a Halloween party and the taco meat is bad. So bad in fact that some of the guests go into zombie mode and chaos ensues. Our friends in the study group wear some pretty great costumes and the rapid onslaught of movie references make this episode a lot of fun to watch – that and Chang dressed as a female figure skater.

Supernatural – Season 4 Episode 7 – “It’s The Great Pumpkin, Sam Winchester”

Ghosts, witches, zombies and demons are all a regular part of the Supernatural universe. In this episode Halloween is at the forefront of the action as Sam must defeat the demon Samhain (appropriately) on October 31st after a witch summons the demon to a small town. Many of the things we love about Halloween make an appearance in this episode: a Halloween party, costumes, spooky decorations, bobbing for apples and candy.

The Simpsons – All 26 Treehouse Of Horror Specials

homer attacking old manWe have to hand it to The Simpsons writers as they’ve kept Halloween fresh and exciting year after year with the annual Treehouse of Horror tradition. So much material yet so little time! Watching any of the Treehouse specials will definitely put you into a Halloween state of mind. If you are looking for a place to start, the fifth in the series (Season 6 Episode 5 Treehouse Of Horror V: Time and Punishment) is regarded as one of the best by many critics by incorporating epic parodies of Soylent Green and The Shining. As a running gag, poor groundskeeper Willie gets an axe in the back during each segment.
