The Geeko’s Favourite Intros & Theme Songs (TV)

A grand entrance always leaves a lasting impression.

No doubt, some of our all-time favourite television shows originally caught our attention with a quirky intro or an epic theme song. When we hear these songs we immediately envision our favourite characters doing whatever it is they do best. From the powerful alt rock intros of Buffy and Veronica Mars to the classic rock of Supernatural and sultry country twang of True Blood, this list counts down many of our most beloved TV show intros.  These are the TheGeeko’s Best TV Theme Songs and Intros.

15 The Walking Dead

A haunting tune set to images that aptly depict the post-zombie apocalyptic world inhabited by Rick Grimes and the others fighting for their lives in this horror/survival series.

14 South Park

A great intro is as easy as hiring Primus to record one! Accompanied by an animated sequence that introduces many of the residents of the titular South Park, Colorado – and yes, Kenny is actually saying something, but you’ll have to google that one if you don’t already know (caveat – it’s NSFW)…

13 The X-Files

Fox Mulder and Dana Scully kept our paranoia levels high during the 90’s with their all-consuming quest for the truth, which we were assured was “out there”. The show’s theme song was so easily recognizable that it even made it into an episode of The Simpsons (Season 8, episode 10)!

12 American Horror Story

Each season has featured creepy imagery to suit its theme but the eerie music that accompanies the intro to this popular horror anthology show has remained the same throughout.

11 X-Men (1992-1997)

The X-Men cartoon from the 90’s – Wolverine in the infamous yellow suit! The cartoon’s theme is one of those songs that once heard cannot easily be erased from your brain, subsequently causing one to walk around humming the tune.  You’re welcome.

10 The Big Bang Theory

The Barenaked Ladies have managed to fit many words into a very short opening sequence of rapidly sung lyrics. Despite this, it is hard not to sing along even if most of us are destined to get some of the words wrong. Almost like a tongue twister, this theme song is one of the most fun to make this list – and the only sitcom.

9 True Detective

Another anthology series – True Detective, unlike American Horror Story, has opted to change songs with the changing seasons. In season one, the hauntingly beautiful “Far From Any Road” by The Handsome Family and in season two Leonard Cohen’s “Nevermind”. Both of these songs, combined with stark imagery, prepare us for the brilliantly bizarre episodes that follow.

Season 1

Season 2

8 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1987-1996)

Try not to sing along!  “They’re heroes in a half shell and they’re green”.  Probably the catchiest ear worm to make this list – once you’ve got the words stuck in your head you’ll be singing this for the rest of the day.

7 True Blood

Sultry and naughty, the opening sequence of this series, set to the Jace Everett song “Bad Things” – pretty much sums up this HBO series based on the Charlaine Harris, Sookie Stackhouse novels.

6 Supernatural

The Winchester brothers have not been “in Kansas anymore” for a long time (all bad puns intended). While the show doesn’t really have a “theme song” per se – Carry On My Wayward Son by classic rock icons Kansas, is the song of choice to kick off many of the show’s episode recaps.  Always starting with “The road so far…” before hitting us with the epic aforementioned rock song – inclusion in this list was a no-brainer really.

5 Veronica mars

“A long time ago we used to be friends…” The Dandy Warhols alt rock hit We Used To Be Friends was always a fitting intro for our favourite not-so-amateur sleuth. Given the fact that Veronica started off the series as a “lone wolf” banished from her popular teenage “pack” after the unfortunate murder of her best friend Lilly Kane – she literally “used to be friends” with everyone at Neptune High.

4 Game Of Thrones

George RR Martin’s epic series of novels made its debut as a television series on HBO in 2011 and we have been riveted ever since. The show has had many poignant moments to date, but the epic opening sequence – set to the epic theme song – is evocative on the scale of a national anthem and demands GOT devotion.

3 Buffy The Vampire Slayer

Joss Whedon’s television series spanned 7 seasons and the short guitar driven theme song by pop-punk band Nerf Herder never got old. I once happened upon a musical birthday card that played the tune – best card ever!

2 Star Trek & The Next Generation

“Space… The Final Frontier…” words that have kicked off some pretty amazing television episodes for generations of fans. The original series and The Next Generation both commence with an opening that promises adventure and a profound television experience where the viewer will “boldly go where no man has gone before”.

Star Trek (original)

The Next Generation

1 Doctor Who

At the top of the list, the ultimate intro spanning 50 years of television mastery: The theme to Doctor Who. Perhaps one of the most recognizable intros in television history, at its core, this song has not changed much over the years. Eerie music, often set to a series of “timey-wimey” images (wormholes, clocks etc.) there is no better soundtrack to herald an adventure with everyone’s favourite Time Lord.
